I've got gadgets and gizmos aplenty. I've got whooz-its and whatz-its galore. You want thingamabobs? I got twenty. But who cares? No big deal. I want mooooore. Oh! Pardon me. I was just fantasizing about being a mermaid again. But while I'm on the subject of whooz-its and whatz-its galore, Ariel needed some home storage solutions, 'cause it was getting pretty cluttered in her mermaid pad. And while I'm not big on having home storage gadgets and gizmos aplenty, I do love these five items, especially if you're short on space for your thingamabobs. Read on, Mermaids!
Must-Have Home Storage Product #1: Cabinet Shelves
This is my favorite! To fully take advantage of the vertical space available in your cabinets, put some extra shelving in there.
This is especially helpful if you have several sets of dishes for different occasions (that you actually use- obviously) and you can’t stack them on top of another. Add in some portable cabinet shelving and you’ll double your storage space!
Must-Have Home Storage Product #2: Drawer Organizers
Just because something has been stuffed into a drawer with a bunch of junk doesn’t mean that it’s organized. And while all drawers may not need an organizer since they may not have much in them, those that are full to the brim, such as make-up drawers and those for catch-alls. Grab a couple and see what a difference it makes.
Must-Have Home Storage Product #3: A Closet System
Now this is probably the most costly, but it will change your life! Closet systems give you much more flexibility for storage than a basic rod and shelf. Shelves can be higher for longer items, shorter and double-stacked for slacks and tops, have shelving for shoes and handbags, drawers, the list goes on.
I highly suggest getting one custom made for your space by a company like California Closets or getting something configured by The Container Store, but there are also a lot of “off-the rack” solutions as well.
Must-Have Home Storage Product #4: Underbed Cases
Unused space! This is a great place for items that you need/love, but don’t use very often. Just don’t use this place to horde more junk, or we’re going to have to have a talk! Examples of little-used items that would be great for under the bed:
- Holiday Décor
- Seasonal Clothing
- Crafting Supplies
- Camera/Hobby Equipment
Must-Have Home Storage Product #5: Furniture with Built-In Storage
Now be warned- some of this is fugly! Like bad! Like any sofa with storage capabilities in the cushions. Just walk away! But a cute little ottoman or bench with added storage inside is great, especially in the living room to put away kids toys and still make them accessible, or you can add one to your closet to use as a hamper.
