The Best Star Wars Inspired Home Decor in the Galaxy

Oh yes! The Last Jedi dropped this weekend (I may have seen it twice)! Not that I’ve been counting down the days since Rogue One hit theaters last year or anything! But seriously, I love all things from a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, and thought it would be fun to show how to decorate a Star Wars inspired home without looking like a teenager. Let's have some fun and get the Force running through your space!

Star Wars Inspired Home Décor Step 1: Start With a Masculine, Vintage Base

This is the key to making your Star Wars living room or bedroom look like it belongs in the land of adulting.

Worn leather, plaids, antiqued rugs and deep hues of charcoal, emerald, oxblood, and cognac create a sophisticated base that can afford the bit of scifi greatness that you’re going to add into the rest of the room.

Pro Tip: The key, as always, is to mix-up your materials. Metals, woods, a variety of textiles, and you’re on your way!

Star Wars Inspired Home Décor Step 2: Hang Tribute Art

No Star Wars home is complete without a stylish gallery of your favorite film or character.

Go for something unexpected, and don’t just hang the same old traditional movie posters that you can find in Wal-Mart.

There are a variety of alt-movie poster artists out there, so check out my recommendations, see what you like best, and plan out a fun gallery.

Pro Tip: Don’t skimp on cheap frames. That is what will keep your space in the teen zone. I love Framebridge for custom framing, but you can also check out frames on Etsy, Amazon, and Target. Just make sure there’s glass and not plastic.

Star Wars Inspired Home Décor Step 3: Add Fun Lightin

There are some pretty fricking amazing Star Wars light fixtures out there! Or you can get something a bit space-inspired and starburst shaped.

To keep things classy, go whimsical with your lights, but traditional in your styling by adding two symmetrical pendants on either side of your sofa or bed. Super dramatic!

Pro Tip: If you don’t already have the junction boxes for lights in your ceiling, hire an electrician to put them in for you and include a dimmer switch so you can control the lighting.

Star Wars Inspired Home Décor Step 4: Layer in an Accessory or Two

Now don’t go crazy!

A Funko Pop Head situation on a shelf here, a throw pillow there. Maybe a mug to bring out for some coffee.

The goal is not for your space to look like a museum of all things Jedi Master and Sith Lord.

A little goes a long way!

And don’t hesitate to use these tips in your kid and teenager spaces as well!

The foundation of classic furniture will last for years, and they can easily switch out the theme of the space as they get older.

And if they want to keep it Star Wars for the long haul, I am totally on their side!

But I know not many of us have the time to go all out with our holiday home décor, so this week I’m sharing five simple ways to get your home from Scroogefest to jingling all the way!

Holiday Home Décor Idea #1: The Personalized Christmas Tree

I was watching television a few days ago and a Christmas commercial came on.

The tree was the traditional setup- red and silver bobbles with some red and green plaid ribbon.

Absolutely no personality!

I highly recommend you add a bit of your own style into your tree.

We’re talking from the skirt to the topper!

I’m all about starting with a layer of basic ornaments in a color scheme that goes with my home (that’s pink and minty teals) and then adding in some of those fun ornaments that represent my family.

We have Star Wars, Star Trek, and plenty of Doctor Who, with a dash of macarons, pretty birds, champagne bottles, and a corgi dog that looks just like my Mr. Darcy.

Want to learn more about how I decorate my tree? Check out this blog post for more details!

Holiday Home Décor Idea #2: The Create-a-Cocktail Bar

Want to add to your holiday décor and make your guests feel at home?

Nothing is worse than having to ask the hostess for another drink.

I often won’t because I know she’s very busy.

So why not create a bar setup, either on a buffet, credenza, or bar cart, so your guests have exactly what they need to refill.

My go-to, easy cocktail in a dash of Peach Raspberry Grand Marnier topped off with sparkling wine or champagne. So easy to just put the bottles out for others!

And don’t forget the non-alcoholic beverages as well.

You can have tea, water, coffee, eggnog. The possibilities are endless!

But to make things easy on yourself, create a simple beverage menu, maybe two cocktails, water, and tea.

Holiday Home Décor Idea #3: The Simple Centerpiece

Centerpieces don’t have to be complicated!

All you need is a focal point and a bit of filler.

My simple solution is a putz house, some bottle brush trees, fake snow, and some round traditional Christmas ornaments.

If you really want to have some fun with your family, you can make your own putz house village, or you can buy them already made.

And depending on the length of your table, you may need a few houses or just one.

First layer on the fake snow. (You may want to skip this step depending on your table. Mine is reclaimed wood, so that would be a mess trying to get the snow out of the crevices.)

Then place your house in the center.

Add in trees and a few ornaments here and there to fill in some space.

Voila! A beautiful centerpiece!

Not wanting to spend a lot of cash on one of those beautiful putz houses? You can always swap that out for some vases with flowers. Still gorgeous!

Holiday Home Décor Idea #4: Sophisticated Gift Giving

You don’t need to use the traditional red and green Christmas wrapping paper with Santas and candy canes if you don’t want to (and if you do it’s totally cool!).

You don’t even need to use holiday wrapping paper!

You know that color scheme you used for your tree?

Stick to it with your wrapping paper!

Maybe that means you use butcher paper and gold ribbon!

Or pink and gold paper with a rustic twine.

Or a wilder color scheme of green, yellow, orange, and magenta because you’ve decided to have a Boho holiday.

Have fun and be creative with your packaging!

Holiday Home Décor Idea #5: The Forest Mantle

Remember those bottle brush trees that you used for your centerpiece?

Well, you’re going to need more of them! Or glass, or glitter- your choice!

An easy way to set up your mantle for the seasons is to create a forest of colorful trees of various shades and heights.

You can go rainbow if your décor allows for it, you can choose a few colors to tie the look together, or you can choose to go for one color in varying shades, like all pinks and reds, or all teals and blues.

For a more maximalist approach, create a thicket of trees. Or you can go minimalist and do a simple line across your mantle.

Either way: easy, customizable for your color scheme, and very chic!

And that’s exactly what your holiday décor should be- easy and doable with what you already have going on! Here’s hoping that these quick and easy tips make your winter gatherings chic and polished and reduces your overwhelm!

Lessons From Interior Design School: What You Can Learn From My Six Year Journey

Lessons From Interior Design School: What You Can Learn From My Six Year Journey

This weekend I did something that I put off for a long time- I threw away all of my design school materials. They were taking up space and I didn’t need them anymore. And while I thought it would be hard getting rid of hours of work and thousands of dollars of supplies, I realized that the six year journey I took to heal from my mother’s death wasn’t about the materials I had left, or the pretty presentation boards in my office taking up way too much room. It was about what I learned along the way, and now I’m sharing it with you. So here are my lessons from interior design school.

The Pantone Color of the Year 2017: Three Ways to Decorate with Greenery

The Pantone Color of the Year 2017: Three Ways to Decorate with Greenery

I waited. I knew it was coming. I was nervous. I mean, nothing could outdo last year. Rose Quartz was my everything. Have you seen how much I love pink? And last week it was announced. Greenery. Greenery? Geez, it's awfully bright! Wow, now that I think about it, my clients never ask for green. Chartreuse, yes, and maybe a deep hunter, but Greenery? I took to my Instagram party. The reviews were mixed. Some loved green, just not that green. Others were excited for the bright possibilities. A fashion consultant buddy of mine said she was excited for her springs, but her summers weren't going to be happy. Maybe that was it? I am a summer, after all. Will this color be a huge hit? Or will it flop bigger than Marsala ('cause who remembers Marsala? Amirite?) And while I'm still on the fence on whether Greenery, the Pantone Color of the Year for 2017, will be a thing in the home decor world, I did come up with three beautiful options for bringing this bright hue into your home, no matter what your style!
